Jiaying: Welcome to The English We Speak with me, Jiaying…
Neil: … and me, Neil. Have you seen that new film about a wizard who makes friends with an ugly horse that turns into a beautiful unicorn?
Jiaying: Oh yeah! The acting is the definition of cringe! The whole film is so cringe!
Neil: Cringe? What do you mean cringe? You don’t like the film?
Jiaying: Don’t like it?! That’s an understatement – it was awful. The actor who played the wizard was really terrible, and the plot was stupid. We use the word cringe when you want to say something is really embarrassing and makes you feel uncomfortable. It can be used as a verb or an adjective.
Neil: So you can say the film made you cringe or the film was cringe. Why? It wasn’t that bad!
Jiaying: Neil – it was so clichéd ['kliːʃeɪd]. The acting was over the top, and the ugly horse becoming a beautiful unicorn didn’t make any sense - it was so cringe!
Neil: But that’s the point of the film – it was designed to make you cringe – it was that kind of humour! It wasn’t trying to be serious!
Jiaying: Oh, in that case, I didn’t get it! So, actually, if it was intentionally cringe, it was quite funny. Let’s talk more about things that are cringe after these examples.

When she told me how she had sat in the wrong meeting for an hour before realising, I cringed.
Jiaying: You’re listening to The English We Speak from BBC Learning English, and we’re talking about the word ‘cringe’. It can be used to describe something or someone that makes you feel embarrassed. You can also say ‘cringey’, as an adjective.
Neil: Yes, so you can describe someone or something as cringe – so like an embarrassing person or joke.
Jiaying: Yes! Or even an experience. What’s the most cringe thing that’s ever happened to you?
Neil: Well, you may be surprised, but quite few cringey things have happened to me!
Jiaying: I can imagine! I think your most cringey moment is when you arrived at the party dressed as a giant cucumber ['kjuːkʌmbə]!
Neil: To be fair – I was dressed as a courgette [kɔː'ʒet], and I thought it was a fancy dress party because you said dress fancily!
Jiaying: It was so cringe! I meant to wear a fancy suit – it was a wedding.
Neil: Yeah – I cringed a lot. But at least I ended up in lots of photos!
Jiaying: You certainly did! Bye, Neil.
Neil: Bye.

Jiaying : Ne pas l'aimer ?! C'est un euphémisme ; c'était affreux. L'acteur qui jouait le sorcier était vraiment terrible et l'intrigue était stupide. Nous utilisons le mot flipper quand on veut dire que quelque chose est vraiment embarrassant et vous met mal à l'aise. Il peut être utilisé comme un verbe ou un adjectif.
Neil : Donc on peut dire que le film vous a fait flipper ou que le film était flippant. Pourquoi ? Il n'était pas si mal que ça !
Jiaying : Neil, c'était tellement cliché. Le jeu d'acteur était exagéré (excessif), et le cheval moche devenant une belle licorne n'avait aucun sens ; c'était tellement flippant !
Neil : Mais c'est le but (l’intérêt) du film. Il a été conçu pour vous faire flipper ; c'était ce genre d'humour ! Il n'essayait pas d'être sérieux (grave, profond) !
Jiaying : Oh, dans ce cas, je n'ai pas pigé ! Donc, en fait, s’il était intentionnellement flippant, il était assez drôle. Parlons davantage des choses qui sont flippantes après ces exemples.

Avez-vous entendu cette horrible blague qu'il a racontée ! Elle était tellement flippante !
Quand mon oncle commence à danser, on ne sait vraiment plus où se mettre.
Quand elle m'a raconté comment elle avait assisté à la mauvaise réunion pendant une heure avant de s'en rendre compte, je n'ai pas su où me mettre.
Jiaying : Vous écoutez L’anglais que nous parlons de BBC Learning English, et nous parlons du mot "flipper". Il peut être utilisé pour décrire quelque chose ou quelqu'un qui vous met mal à l'aise. Vous pouvez également dire "flippant", comme adjectif.
Neil : Oui, ainsi, vous pouvez qualifier quelqu'un ou quelque chose comme flippant : ainsi comme une personne ou une blague gênante.
Jiaying : Oui ! Ou même une expérience. Quelle est la chose la plus flippante qui vous soit jamais arrivée ?
Neil : Eh bien, vous pourriez être surpris, mais il m'est arrivé assez peu de choses flippantes !
Jiaying : Je peux imaginer ! Je pense que votre moment le plus flippant a été lorsque vous êtes arrivé à la soirée (fête) habillé en concombre géant !
Neil : Pour être honnête, j'étais habillé en courgette et je pensais que c'était une soirée costumée parce que vous aviez dit s'habiller avec fantaisie !
Jiaying : Ce fut tellement flippant ! Je voulais dire de mettre (porter) un costume chic ; c'était un mariage.
Neil : Ouais. J'ai beaucoup flippé. Mais au moins je me suis retrouvé sur plein de photos !
Jiaying : Ça c’est certain ! Au revoir, Neil.
