Introduction
The men’s football World Cup is coming, and excitement has reached fever pitch! It’s an expression used to describe a state of high emotion, and because it’s got the word ‘pitch’ in it, it’s often associated with football.
Jiaying: Hello and welcome to The English We Speak with me Jiaying...
Neil: … and me, Neil.
Jiaying: You look rather excited, Neil?
Neil: Of course I am. The football World Cup is about to start! Excitement has reached fever pitch.
Jiaying: Well that doesn’t sound very good. The last thing we need at the World Cup is fever on the pitch!
Neil: Don’t worry, Jiaying, there’s no actual fever on the football pitch. No one is ill! ‘Fever pitch’ is just an expression that means there are high levels of excitement.
Jiaying: Thank goodness for that. Let’s hear some examples.
Examples
I was at the school sports day and excitement was at fever pitch. The kids were going crazy supporting their classmates!
Criticism of the company CEO was at fever pitch. The staff were really unhappy.
Anger reached fever pitch after the referee said it wasn’t a goal.
Jiaying: This is The English We Speak from BBC Learning English. We’re talking about the expression ‘fever pitch’, which means a state of high emotion.
Neil: As you heard in the examples, it’s not just excitement that can be at fever pitch. It can be any strong emotion, such as anger or criticism.
Jiaying: That’s right. And we often use it with ‘reach’ or the verb ‘to be’ plus ‘at’ – so, ‘excitement reached fever pitch’, or ‘anger was at fever pitch’.
Neil: And one last point – it’s not really a football expression, but because it contains the word ‘pitch’ it’s often used when describing football. Right, can I carry on getting excited about the World Cup now?
Jiaying: Yes, and if England or Wales do well, excitement really will be at fever pitch in the UK. Bye!

La Coupe du monde de football masculin approche et l'excitation a atteint son paroxysme ! C'est une expression utilisée pour décrire un état d'émotion intense, et parce qu'elle contient le mot ”terrain”, elle est souvent associée au football.
Jiaying : Bonjour et bienvenue dans L’anglais que nous parlons avec moi Jiaying...
Neil : … et moi, Neil.
Jiaying : Vous avez l'air plutôt excité, Neil ?
Neil : Bien sûr que je le suis. La coupe du monde de football est sur le point de commencer ! L'excitation a atteint son comble.
Jiaying : Eh bien, ça ne semble pas très bon. La dernière chose dont on a besoin à la Coupe du monde, c'est de la fièvre sur le terrain !
Neil : Ne vous inquiétez pas, Jiaying, il n'y a pas de véritable fièvre sur le terrain de football. Personne n'est malade ! ”Comble” n'est qu'une expression qui signifie qu'il y a des niveaux élevés d'excitation.

La critique du PDG de l'entreprise était à son comble. Le personnel était vraiment mécontent.
La colère a atteint son paroxysme après que l'arbitre a déclaré que ce n'était pas un but.
Jiaying : C'est L’anglais que nous parlons de BBC Learning English. Nous parlons de l'expression ”paroxysme”, qui signifie un état de forte émotion.
Neil : Comme vous l'avez entendu dans les exemples, il n'y a pas que l'excitation qui peut être à son comble. Il peut s'agir de n'importe quelle émotion forte, comme la colère ou la critique.
Jiaying : C'est exact. Et nous l'utilisons souvent avec "atteindre" ou le verbe "être" plus "à" ; ainsi, "l'excitation a atteint son paroxysme", ou "la colère était à son comble".
Neil : Et un dernier point ; ce n'est pas vraiment une expression de football, mais parce qu'il contient le mot "terrain", il est souvent utilisé en parlant (décrivant) le football. Bon, puis-je continuer à m'enthousiasmer pour la Coupe du monde maintenant ?
