Feifei: Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, where we explain phrases used by fluent English speakers so that you can use them as well. I'm Feifei, and I'm here with Beth.
Beth: Hi everyone, and hi Feifei, how are you?
Feifei: I'm very well, thank you. The expression we're looking at in this programme is 'from the get-go'. I could say I've presented for BBC Learning English from the get-go.
Beth: Ah, yes! 'From the get-go' means right from the beginning, so you have presented in this job ever since you started.
Feifei: I have. And we can use this for anything that has a beginning. For example, I recently went on holiday, and I had a perfect holiday from the get-go.
Beth: Great, sounds wonderful.
Feifei: Beth, do you have an example?
Beth: Yeah, so I went to the cinema recently and this film – the opening scene was so funny – and the whole film was just hilarious from the get-go.
Feifei: You'll have to tell me the name of the film!
Beth: I will! But first here are some more examples of the expression 'from the get-go'.
Examples
I just have a really good friendship with him. It was obvious when we first met that we were going to get on well from the get-go.
I took a flight the other day, and there was a lot of turbulence ['tɜːbjələns] from the get-go. It was absolutely terrifying.
I read [red] this book about wizards and elves ['ɛlvz]. I loved it from the get-go.
Beth: Now, we can also say 'right from the get-go'. When we put 'right' in front of an expression like this, it really emphasises that it was exactly from the beginning.
Feifei: Yes. And there are other expressions similar to this one, like 'from the very start' or 'from the very beginning'. And, again, we can add 'right' in front of these expressions to add emphasis ['ɛmfəsɪs]. For example, 'right from the very start'.
Beth: So, to recap, we’ve learnt the expression 'from the get-go' which means from the beginning.

Feifei : Je vais très bien, merci. L'expression que nous examinons dans cette émission est ”dès le début”. Je pourrais dire que j'ai été présentatrice pour BBC Learning English depuis le début.
Beth : Ah, oui ! ”Depuis le début” signifie juste à partir du commencement, donc vous avez été présentatrice dans cet emploi dès le moment où vous avez commencé.
Feifei : C’est ça. Et nous pouvons l'utiliser pour quoi que ce soit qui a un début. Par exemple, je suis récemment partie en vacances et j'ai passé des vacances parfaites dès le début.
Beth : Super, ça a l'air merveilleux.
Feifei : Beth, avez-vous un exemple ?
Beth : Oui, je suis allée au cinéma récemment et j'ai vu ce film – la scène d'ouverture était tellement drôle – et le film entier était tout simplement hilarant dès le début.
Feifei : Il faudra me dire le nom du film !
Beth : Je le ferai ! Mais d'abord, voici d'autres exemples de l'expression ”dès le début”.
Exemples
J'ai juste une très bonne amitié avec lui. Il a été évident lors de notre première rencontre que nous allions bien nous entendre dès le début.
J'ai pris un avion l'autre jour, et il y a eu beaucoup de turbulences dès le départ. C'était absolument terrifiant.
J'ai lu ce livre sur les magiciens (sorciers) et les elfes. Je l'ai adoré dès le début.
Beth : Cela dit, nous pouvons aussi dire ”juste dès le début”. Lorsque nous mettons ”juste” devant une expression comme celle-ci, cela souligne vraiment que c'était exactement depuis le début.
Feifei : Oui. Et il existe d'autres expressions similaires à celle-ci, comme ”depuis le tout début” ou ”dès le commencement”. Et, là encore, nous pouvons ajouter ”juste” devant ces expressions pour accentuer un peu plus. Par exemple, ”exactement depuis le tout début”.
Beth : Donc, pour résumer, nous avons appris l'expression ”dès le début”, qui signifie depuis le commencement.
