Introduction
In this programme, Rob thinks he gets praise for not helping Feifei but soon gets to realise that having ‘thanks’ in an English phrase is loaded with sarcasm. Find out more about saying ‘thanks a bunch’ in this programme.
Feifei: Hello, I'm Feifei and this is The English We Speak.
Rob: And hello, I'm Rob. So, Feifei, about tonight…
Feifei: Oh yes, you have kindly agreed to help me decorate my living room after work.
Rob: Yes… err… that was very kind of me. Too kind in fact. I'm very sorry, but I've got other plans now so I can't help.
Feifei: Thanks a bunch!
Rob: Oh, you're not angry then? You’re thankful I'm not helping you?
Feifei: No, Rob. I'm not happy. I was being sarcastic. When we say 'thanks a bunch! ' to someone, we're not saying 'thank you' – we are being ironic and really mean we are unhappy, annoyed or angry because they are being unhelpful or not doing what they said they would do. What am I going to do now, Rob? I need to get the decorating done before my parents visit tomorrow!
Rob: Why don't you listen to these examples, then you'll know you are not alone?
Feifei: Thanks a bunch!
You've used all the milk in the fridge. Thanks a bunch!

Feifei: This is The English We Speak from BBC Learning English. We’re hearing about the phrase 'thanks a bunch', which can be used as a sarcastic reply to someone who is being unhelpful or not doing what they said they would do. A similar phrase is 'thanks for nothing'. Rob, what’s so important that you can’t help me decorate tonight?
Rob: Well, it’s Neil's birthday and he's having some drinks…
Feifei: …and you'd rather do that. Well, thanks a bunch – enjoy yourself!
Rob: Sorry, Feifei. But I have bought you a present to say 'sorry'. There you go… a bunch of flowers.
Feifei: Oh I love flowers… but not dead ones. These have all dried up!
Rob: Ah well, it's the thought that counts.
Feifei: Thanks a bunch. Bye for now.
Rob: Bye.
Introduction
Dans cette émission, Rob pense qu'il reçoit des louanges pour ne pas avoir aidé Feifei, mais bientôt en vient à se rend compte qu'avoir "merci" dans une expression anglaise est chargé de sarcasme. Apprenez-en plus sur la manière de dire ”Alors là, merci !” dans cette émission.

Rob : Et bonjour, je m’appelle Rob. Alors, Feifei, à propos de ce soir…
Feifei : Oh oui, tu as gentiment accepté de m'aider à décorer mon salon après le travail.
Rob : Oui… euh… c'était très gentil de ma part. Trop gentil en fait. Je suis vraiment désolé, mais j'ai d'autres plans maintenant donc je ne peux pas t’aider.
Feifei : Alors là vraiment, merci !
Rob : Oh, tu n'es pas en colère alors ? Tu es reconnaissante que je ne t'aide pas ?
Feifei : Non, Rob. Je ne suis pas contente. J'étais sarcastique. Quand on dit ”Alors là, j’te remercie !” à quelqu'un, on ne dit pas "merci", on est ironique et on veut vraiment dire qu’on est mécontent, agacé ou en colère parce qu'il n’est d’aucun secours ou ne fait pas ce qu'il a dit qu'il ferait. Qu'est-ce que je vais faire maintenant, Rob ? Il faut que je finisse la décoration avant la visite de mes parents demain !
Rob : Pourquoi n'écoute-tu pas ces exemples, alors tu sauras que tu n'es pas toute seule ?
Feifei : Ouais, j’te remercie !

Feifei : C'est L'anglais que nous parlons de BBC Learning English. On nous parle de l'expression "Alors là, merci !", qui peut être utilisée comme une réplique sarcastique à quelqu'un qui n'est d’aucun secours ou ne fait pas ce qu'il a dit qu'il ferait. Une expression similaire est "merci quand même". Rob, qu'y a-t-il de si important pour que tu ne puisses pas m'aider à décorer ce soir ?
Rob : Eh bien, c'est l'anniversaire de Neil et il offre un pot...
Feifei : … et tu préfères faire ça. Eh bien, va, j’te remercie ! Amuse-toi bien !
Rob : Désolé, Feifei. Mais je t'ai acheté un cadeau pour te dire "désolé". Voilà… un bouquet (botte) de fleurs.
Feifei : Oh j'adore les fleurs… mais pas les [fleurs] mortes. Celles-ci sont toutes desséchées !
Rob : Eh bien, c'est la pensée qui compte.
Feifei : Alors là, merci bien ! À la prochaine.
