Feifei: Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, where we explain phrases used by fluent English speakers so that you can use them as well. I'm Feifei, and I'm here with Beth.
Beth: Hi everyone, and hi Feifei, how are you?
Feifei: I'm very well, thank you, Beth. We're learning 'warts and all' which I heard on a podcast about an autobiography. An actress I like has written about her life, "warts and all", she said.
Beth: Ah, yes – 'warts and all'. It means that we talk about a person or thing exactly as it is, including flaws and imperfections. And the person doesn't have to actually have a real wart!
Feifei: No! A wart is lump on the skin. So, this actress had some problems a few years ago and she included all the details about that, so when you talk about difficult or unpleasant things, we can say warts and all.
Beth: OK, I have an example for this. So recently I was looking through some old photos of me when I was at school, so me and my friends as teenagers, and those photos were definitely not edited. We were there, warts and all.
Feifei: Beth, I'm sure you looked just fine there.
Beth: Here are some more examples of 'warts and all'.
Examples
I went away for the weekend with my best friend and we had a really good time, but he does annoy me quite a lot. But that's friendship, isn't it – you've got to accept people warts and all.
I adopted a cat and I love him warts and all – he's a bit scruffy, sometimes he's a big naughty and ruins my furniture but, you know, he's a great little friend.
I've just read this film review – it's one of the most honest I've ever seen. It's a real warts and all review. You know, it says the film is OK but the acting is terrible, the special effects are unrealistic. They don't hold back really.
Beth: Now, this phrase is really helpful to think about pronunciation, particularly linking, in English. This phrase sounds like one long word even though it's three – 'warts and all'.
Feifei: When we have words that end in consonant sounds, like 'warts' and 'and', followed by words that begin with vowel ['vaʊəl] sounds, like 'and' and 'all', we link them together so that they sound like one word – 'warts and all'.
Beth: And it's also common in British English to not say the /d/ on 'and', but this is optional. 'Warts and all' or 'warts an all'. So, to recap, we’ve learnt 'warts and all' which means show everything, including imperfections.

Beth : Ah, oui – ”défauts y compris”. Cela signifie que nous parlons d'une personne ou d'une chose exactement telle qu'elle est, y compris les défauts et les imperfections. Et la personne n'a pas besoin d'avoir une vraie verrue !
Feifei : Non ! Une verrue est une grosseur (bosse) sur la peau. Donc, cette actrice a eu des problèmes il y a quelques années et elle a inclus tous les détails à ce sujet, donc quand vous parlez de choses difficiles ou désagréables, nous pouvons dire défauts inclus.
Beth : OK, j'ai un exemple pour cela. Récemment, j'ai regardé de vieilles photos de moi quand j'étais à l'école, donc moi et mes amis étant adolescents, et ces photos n'avaient assurément pas été retouchées. Nous étions là, avec nos défauts et tout.
Feifei : Beth, je suis sûre que vous aviez l'air très bien là.
Beth : Voici d'autres exemples de ”défauts y compris”.
Exemples
Je suis partie en week-end avec mon meilleur ami et nous avons passé un vraiment bon moment, mais il m'agace pas mal. Mais c'est ça l'amitié, n'est-ce pas ? Il vous faut accepter les gens avec leurs défauts et tout.
J'ai adopté un chat et je l'aime avec ses défauts et tout. Il est un peu miteux, parfois c’est un gros polisson (coquin) et il détériore mes meubles mais, vous savez, c'est un excellent petit ami.
Je viens de lire cette critique de film. C'est l'une des plus honnêtes que j'aie jamais vues. C'est une vraie critique avec les défauts et tout. Vous savez, elle dit que le film est bien mais que le jeu des acteurs est horrible, les effets spéciaux ne sont pas réalistes. Ils ne maitrisent pas vraiment.
Beth : Cela dit, cette expression est vraiment utile pour réfléchir à la prononciation, en particulier à la liaison, en anglais. Cette expression à l’air d’un long mot même s'il s’agit de trois : ”warts and all”.
Feifei : Lorsque nous avons des mots qui se terminent par des consonnes, comme ”warts” et ”and”, suivis de mots qui commencent par des voyelles, comme ”and” et ”all”, nous les lions ensemble pour qu'ils sonnent comme un seul mot : ”warts and all”.
Beth : Et il est également courant en anglais britannique de ne pas dire le /d/ de ”and”, mais c'est facultatif. ”Warts and all” ou ”warts and all”. Donc, pour récapituler, nous avons appris ”warts an all”, ce qui signifie tout montrer, y compris les imperfections.
